Motivation vs. Discipline
Did you know that 80% of New Year’s resolutions die out by February? It's now February 4th, so you can bet a lot of dreams have died off by now.
Why does this happen? Do we lose our motivation? Or is it discipline that we lack? And what’s the difference between the two?
Let me break it down:
Motivation is something that’s always there. We see a photo in a magazine or on Instagram and think, YES I want to look like that, or yes I want to travel there. We can get motivated in an instant.
Discipline on the other hand, doesn’t just appear from looking at a photo.
Here’s an example:
One of my New year’s resolutions is to travel more, therefore I am motivated to travel. But, in order to travel, I need to be disciplined enough to save my money and not buy the newest Gymshark release (...yea right…). So, motivated to travel? Yes. Disciplined enough to save for it? That’s the real test.
Discipline is what will set you apart from the rest and best of them. We’re motivated to get in shape, to save money, to start a business, to STEP ON STAGE (whaaaat?!). But discipline requires ACTION in order to get you there.
The ACT of saying no, I want to go to Greece this year, these Gymsharks can wait.
The ACT of going to the gym and getting your workout in at 8pm after a 9 hour day of work.
The ACT of preparing your meals for the week so you’re not tempted to eat out and mess up your nutrition goals.
Discipline is taking action despite emotion.
No more I’m too tired’s.
No more Diet starts tomorrow’s.
No more One pair of Gymsharks won’t hurt. (Lol okay I really need to take my own advice on that one.)
Instead, take the ACTION that’s necessary to make the dream a reality. Then your resolutions won’t ever have to die.
Love,
Phoebe XO
